It can bring light and darkness; unleash a war and achieve peace; relieve a wound or burn it. The olive tree is one of the most powerful trees in the world or, as the Romans said, "olea primum omnium arborem est". For them he was the "king of the trees", the one who represented immortality and who marked the territories conquered by the Empire as a symbol of greatness. But the Romans were not the only ones who adored this imposing and generous tree: all the Mediterranean peoples succumbed to its earthly magic, which has accompanied our History since the beginning of time, and served as inspiration for infinite legends. One of these legends tells that in ancient Greece there was a territory whose protection was disputed by Poseidon and Pallas Athena. The god of the Sea was convinced of his victory (since he raised a fiery horse from the ground), but his sister -the goddess of Wisdom- had an infallible weapon in her power ... Athena offered the king of those lands an ancient tree, symbol of peace and from whose interior the valuable oil would be extracted that would serve to illuminate the night, provide food and alleviate wounds: the olive tree. Athena was victorious, and the city of Athens was founded in her honor. Its sacred origin gave it a capital importance in ancient Greece. Cutting an olive tree planted on public land was punished with exile, and the winners of the Olympic Games received a crown of olive branches as a prize (years later, the laurel replaced the olive tree). In Egypt, the pharaohs were also buried with olive wreaths, remains of olives have even been found as an offering to cross to the Hereafter. Moreover, according to Egyptian mythology, it was the very wife of Osiris (the goddess Isis) who transmitted the procedure of extracting olive oil ... In holy books, the olive tree also plays a prominent role. The Bible reveals that when Noah released a dove, she returned with an olive branch in her beak, hinting that it was the only plant species that survived the flood. From that moment on, Christians considered this solemn tree as an ambassador of peace. Him and the dove, of course.
